Sony Reveals VR Headset “Project Morpheus”

Last night at a special briefing, Sony unveiled their answer to the Oculus Rift called Project Morpheus.

The virtual reality headset is the result of three years of research and development and the prototype shown includes lots of familiar Sony and VR tech. The Playstation Move was heavily featured as Sony emphasized six degrees of motion tracking. The headset used the same tracking tech found in the DualShock 4 and the PS4 camera.

Sony’s President said that they have a tremendous amount of respect for other people in the VR space like Oculus and Valve, and said much of their recent work is due to the feedback from press about their offerings.

The specs of Morpheus include a 1080p display with a 90 degree field of view. It uses 1000Hz polling, the same rate as most gaming mice, and tracks in a three-axis environment. The PS4 camera will track the headset like it tracks PS Move controllers.

If you have friends over while using Morpheus, they’ll be able to see a more traditional video image on your TV while you play with the headset. So what about games? So far only EVE: Valkyrie and special build of Thief from Square Enix have been announced, but with the vast library Playstation has at their disposal, you can only imagine the possibilities.
